Magic Guide

First of all, this guide is for runescape players that are very new to the game and/or f2p(free to play) players. This guide will show you what you need to become a decent mage, what to wear, wilderness rules, etc.
Beginning

Every mage will be powerless without runes. There are all kinds of runes in the game ranging from mind runes, fire runes, body runes, nature runes, and more. This will most likely be covered in Tutorial Island, but you will need specific runes to use specific spells. The first spell you will be able to use is air strike, damage ranging from 1-5. The last spell non- members can cast will be fire blast, for missile spells. Let’s get into the type of spells.
Types of Magic
Missile spells

Missile spells are the spells that you shoot at other player and monsters to inflict damage. These spells are important because without these spells, you only have your fist to fight with. The levels of the spells ordered from weak to strongest is strike, bolt, blast, and for members wave. The strikes use mind, bolts use chaos, blast uses death and wave uses blood runes
Enchanting spells

These spells make certain changes to items. These spells allow you to enchant items, use alchemy to turn items into gold, use bones to etc. to change bones into food, etc. Theses spells use the cosmic rune.
Cursing spells

Theses spells decreases your opponents skills. These spells include, weaken, curse, bind, etc. The most useful spell is bind because it makes your opponent unavailable to attack. The most powerful of this spell is entangle, which is members only but stops your opponent for about 15 seconds.
Teleport spells

These spells are extremely useful because you can teleport from one place to another. These include teleport to Varrok, teleport to Lumbridge, and teleport to Falador. These spells require intermediate magic level. Another useful tele. spell is telegrab, which allows you to get items you can not reach. Now you are able to home teleport and go to lumbridge for free for the cost of waiting 30 minutes for casting again.
What to wear

If you are a mage, you have to wear robes!! The most common is wizard hat, wizards robe, and wizards skirt(?). People always say blue is better than the black ones, but I personally like the black ones since I like black : ). You should wear leather boots, if you can get your hands on it, colored or combat boots, and leather gloves. Get a elemental staff (fire, earth, air, water), unless you can’t afford it, a regular staff or magic staff. If you get better you should get a amulet of magic, which boosts you magic. Also wield a anti-dragon shield since it does not give you any downgrades. Lastly wear a cape. This is my wear:

* Black wizards hat
* Priests gown
* Priests skirt(?)
* Amulet of magic
* Colored boots
* Cape
* Staff of air

Wilderness
The rule of the wilderness is:

Knights(melee) own range, range own mage, mage own knights.

So the best thing to do as a mage is to have protection against rangers. When going into the wilderness ALWAYS have food, and teleport runes. If you want protection against rangers, the best thing to do is run without risking anything, but if you want to fight, wear d hides, or leather chaps.
Training areas

The best place for mages to train, especially for newbies, is to train on the lesser demon in wizards tower. Since he is locked up, he can’t touch you but you can attack him. Once you get stronger, a good enemy will be the jail guards at the jail by Draynor Village. There is a fence there where the jail guard can get stuck. Once you become pro and you are confident, go to wilderness 48, to the greater ruins, and fight the level 98 greater demons. You can get them stuck on the ruin walls, but unless you are really good, it will take a while for you to kill so watch out for pkers (player killers).
Quests

Make sure to do the witches potion, imp catcher, and rune mystery quests. Witches potion and imp cather are good quests to do because they give you magic experience. Rune mystery is not required but recommended if you don’t have much money to buy runes because if enables you to go rune crafting.
Rune Crafting

This skill allows you to make your own runes. You need essences, which Aubury from the varrok rune shop, or the top wizard in the basement of wizards tower can teleport you to mine them. Once you get essences, you need a talisman or a tiara with the element on it and go to the specific mysterious ruins to craft runes. The ruins are here:

* Air ruin- south of falador, off the road to the east
* Mind ruin- north of falador, go up the stairs you go to when going to barbarian village from falador and instead of going west go north-east into the forest and you will find before going into the wilderness
* Water ruin- in Lumbridge swamps
* Earth ruins- go out of the east gate from varrok and keep going east till you hit the fence. Go north along the fence and you will find it.
* Fire ruin- North of Alkarid. Look on your map for cactuses, its by there.
* Body ruin- right next to barbarian village on the west gate. .

Attacking

There is two ways to attack- auto-cast, or select from spell book. If you are wielding a staff, in the fighting style menu, you can select which spell you want to use by clicking on the spell book there and selecting a missle spell. This allows you to automatically use spells without the need to click on the spell in the spell book and clicking on the enemy every single time.

The other way to use spells is from the spell book. All the spells are listed in here and the ones you are able to cast are brighter than the ones you can’t. click on the spell you wish to use and click on the enemy.
